Night Rose
Night Rose
I don't think I've ever once in my life referred to something as " Sexy " and I'm not going to start with this decoupage piece.
"Ohh that guitar is sexy" or "check out that sexy convertible" are fast examples that come to mind.
It's never felt natural or right, it's never really sat in my go-to vocabulary the same way something looks "sweet" or "dope" or "cooooool". So of course I was interested in figuring out why.
There's actually quite a bit of discussion on this topic online, in all sorts of corners of the internet.
And the gist of it really, outside of people who are actually physically interested in making love to a car (no need to google, I have and can confirm this for you) is that "sexy" is just kinda used as a throwaway term for people who think something is visually appealing and can't / don't want to find a better word for it. It seems pretty simple and innocent if not, lazy.
Now, while again I mention that I may not feel comfortable using that term to describe this piece, you definitely could, and I wouldn't hold it against you.
There's a signature on the back of this piece that is illegible, but signed with the year 1969. My curiosity and "thirst for knowledge" regularly makes me ponder the origin story of most of these pieces, but with this one especially, I feel like I need to know.
A reverse image search gives me plenty of results with a bright red rose, but none of this piece specifically or the source artwork for it.
Who commissioned this? I know that decades ago you could get a photograph transferred to wood in the decoupage style. A framing or art store would have been able to do this for you. These services are long lost to time but DIY guides to make your own still populate the internet. It's not exactly rocket science.
Wondering WHO made this is probably fruitless. Maybe we could focus on WHERE did this piece live? My guess based on the content would be a bedroom. I'd throw down five dollars on it. If not a bedroom, the honeymoon suite of a Hotel? Motel? Holiday Inn? (say what).
I feel like I can scratch kitchen, children's room and washroom off the list of possibilities. These seem improbable and maybe, tasteless? I wouldn't judge you tho if you hang this in your kitchen.
I could see this in a garage or work shop, as with most decoupage pieces there's just a feelin' there. There's some light scuffing and wear on the front of the piece. I would guess this happened during the period of time where this piece may have sat in a box for a few decades rather than wear and tear from living on a wall, but this is the sort of information that regrettably, we'll never ever get to know.
If I close my eyes really hard, I can see stars where the sun used to be when they were open. If i close them less aggressively and hard, I can focus on imagining this hanging on a wall adjacent to a staircase leading into a basement. Maybe we'll just go with that?
