A burro seems to be a lot of work. I was doing some preliminary googling on the subject while looking at this photograph and trying to sort out, is this a burro? Is it a donkey? A mule? There are other words but one of them has to be correct. I deduced at the least, that this beautiful animal in this photograph is a burro, and they are not a “set it and forget it” type of animal.

Burros seem to be similar to Donkeys but are desert adjusted. Beyond that, they also seem to be quite socially needy. They form strong bonds and cannot live alone. They love human companionship and if you leave them to graze they will overeat, thus, burros are better adjusted for a desert location where they get to wander around and look for food rather than just look down, like a donkey amongst grass would.

I thought more about the photograph, where is this burro off to? Did they make it to the location? What might they be carrying? Could they STILL be adventuring somewhere?

The average life expectancy for a burro is 27 - 40 years! That’s longer than a horse and slightly shorter than a camel. It’s incredibly hard to date this photograph. Had the burro been carrying, say, an iPhone 3 on its back, I would have said “Oh, this is from 2008, I bet this guy’s still wandering out there”. And had the photo been from 2008, it would be very possible.
But I am banking more on this being snapped in the later 70s up through the 80’s, which leaves the fate of our burro friend in the air.

At the time of this post, 1984 was 40 years ago. I making a kind-of “ehhhhh maybe” noise with my mouth as I type this, but maybe, “ehhhhh maybe”, you are looking at a photograph of the oldest Burro in the world. Wouldn’t you like to own a photograph of, possibly, the world’s oldest burro? Here’s your chance!
